How To Be Born (In Five Easy Steps)

1. Get conceived

2. Hook into your mother’s womb

3. Hang tight for a few months

4. Turn yourself upside down

5. .....Well, we shan’t embarrass anyone....

How ludicrous, you say! And well you should, for who would imagine that instructions should be given to one who is thoroughly incapable of performing them by an act of his own will.

Yet, we illustrate by this ludicrous example the sheer folly of trying to tell one who is dead in trespasses and sin how to perform spiritual acts which will result in his being born again, especially when we are told so plainly in the Scriptures (John 1:12-13) that belief in Jesus Christ and the new birth is, "Not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

Yes, by the proclamation of the gospel we command all men everywhere to repent, but with the sure knowledge that only those whose hearts have been prepared by a sovereign work of the Holy Spirit will ever receive it.

Let us not imagine that we must enter the kingdom of God to be born again, but as Jesus said, we must be born again before we can enter the kingdom.

It makes all the difference in the world!
