Why Do Men Come To Christ?

Well, that seems like a reasonable question. Let’s consider some possible answers.

One might come to Christ because he just has the good sense to see the benefits of a Christian life. One might come because he is afraid of going to hell, or maybe he just wants to go to heaven when he dies.

Perhaps he is touched by the moving story of Jesus’ sacrifice. Actually, the Bible tells us quite plainly why men come to Christ, and it must be this way, for man by nature would never of himself, choose to follow Christ (see Romans 3).

The answer is found in John 6:44 where Jesus said, "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him."

No man CAN (this word denotes ability as opposed to permission) come, because, "The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh (all men by nature) cannot please God" (Romans 8:7-8). So, God, in His sovereign mercy, chooses to draw those who were given to Christ (verse 37).

He makes them alive by the new birth so that they can see the kingdom of God (John 3:3-5), they see their awful and lost condition, and are made by the grace of God to see Christ as the only hope of salvation.

So, you see, men do not come to Christ because they choose Him. Oh no! They come to Christ because He chose them (John 15:16, Ephesians 1, Rom 9).

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain.
