Why Does God Choose?

In the Old Testament, God chose a nation to be His special people. Israel belonged to Him, He loved them, and He revealed Himself to them and to no other nation.

Why did God choose them? Well, He tells us in Deuteronomy 7:6-8, where we read, "For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: But because the LORD loved you . . . "

He did not choose them because of anything he saw in them, He chose them because it pleased Him to love them.

Now Israel is a type or picture of those who were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world to be His peculiar and special people (Eph 1, I Peter 2:9-10).

God has chosen to love an innumerable people out of every nation, kindred, and language. Why did He choose to love spiritual Israel? It is for the same reason that he chose to love natural Israel. It has sovereignly pleased Him to do so (Romans 9). To God be the glory!

Romans 9:18-21 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
